What is the CE Mark?

The Conformitè Europëenne (CE) Mark - Declaration of Conformity

Providing a CE mark permits products to be sold in countries included in the European Economic Area (EEA) and those included in the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) (List of MRA Countries). CE marking is the responsibility of the manufacturer and typically achieved through self declaration.

A CE mark is not needed for every product entering the European market. Instead, a CE mark is only a necessary legal requirement for specified products (see: products required to display the CE mark).

The CE Mark Procedure

Self-Declaring Conformity to EU Market Requirements

By placing the CE Mark on your products, you as the manufacturer are declaring your products conformity to any relevant EU requirements for that product category.

Before placing the CE mark on your product you must ensure:

  • Your product conforms to all relevant EU wide requirements
  • Determine whether you can self-declare the conformity or if you need assistance from a Notified Body Opinion
  • You have complied the appropriate technical documentation.
  • Draft and sign the EU declaration of conformity for your product.

How to Place the CE Mark on Your Product

CE Marking Guidelines for Manufacturers

Above all, your products CE Mark must be:

  • Visible
  • Legible
  • Indelible (irremovable)

Your CE Mark must contain the “CE” letters in identical vertical dimensions.

The marking should be no smaller than 5mm in size.

The colour and form of the mark may be as you desire, providing the proportions of the “CE” lettering remain the same as the original versions.

If you cannot place the CE mark on your product, for whatever reason, you should affix it to any packaging or accompanying documentation, such as your technical file.

How Much Does CE Marking Cost?

Self-Declaration vs Notified Body Assessment and Notified Body Opinion

If you as the manufacturer have the facilities to perform the necessary conformity assessments of your products and you do not require assistance from a Notified Body, then you will not incur any fees for declaration of your products conformity to EU requirements.

For those who cannot perform the relevant assessments, they will need the inclusion of a Notified Body, of which costs can vary for their services depending on the nature of the product and the conformity assessment required.

Cranage Veritas is an EU Notified Body and can provide you with a Notified Body Opinion regarding your products conformity to EU requirements.

When is CE Marking Not Required?

Products That Do Not Require CE Marking:

CE marking is not required on products sold outside of the EEA (European Economic Area), or for products where there are no relevant EU requirements in existence.

The CE Mark is a mandatory requirement for most products covered by the New Approach Directives, it is strictly forbidden to affix the CE mark to any product that does not require it.

To check what products need CE marking you can find the full list of relevant requirements, directives and regulations on the European Commission’s website.
